31 types of blog post your website needs

Struggling to come up with ideas for blog posts?

Figuring out what to write about is one of the most common struggles bloggers have.

You may have started your blog brimming with ideas but as time has gone on you’ve either lost your inspiration or your mojo, or both!

Figuring out what to writing about is a whole lot easier when you have a niche!

Your niche is the specific area that you write about and every single thing related to that niche. You want your blog to be the ultimate go-to place for that niche.

Having a niche means that you can understand your audience better, and if you understand your audience it can be way easier to figure out what they need you to write for them!

How to come up with blog post ideas

Whether your blog is your full-time job or a side hustle, if you’re a work-at-home mum then spare time to write for your blog is hard to come by.

Because of this you need a list of blog post ideas at the ready so that when you do get time to site down and work on your site, you’re ready to get started right away!

Use the ideas in this blog post (which we will be getting to in just a min) to help give you inspiration.

But you can also try brainstorming about your audience. Think about your niche, better yet write down your niche on a piece of paper.

Now write down all of the things that relate to that niche, including products, practical methods, ideas and things people interested in that niche may need to know.

This gives you a starting point for coming up with blog post titles.

If you’re still stuck, turn to Google or Pinterest!

Type key words related to your niche into the search bar and let autocomplete give you some ideas.

If that’s not working, then try a different variation of key words. When you hit search, scroll down in Google to see what related questions there are. These are often great ideas for blog post topics.

And knowing your competitors is also really handy! Take a look at other bloggers in your niche who are successful. What are they blogging about? Have they written about a topic that’s missing from your blog?

You should never copy, but you can go ahead and do your own version of that post!

1. Ultimate guide

This takes the reader through absolutely everything they need to know about a subject.

It could be an ultimate guide to doing a particular method or an ultimate guide to using a particular product.

Some examples of ultimate guide posts include:

  • Ultimate guide to baking your own bread
  • Ultimate guide to starting your own blog
  • Ultimate guide to contouring
  • Ultimate guide to using cloth nappies

Your ultimate guide needs to be well formatted so that it’s easy to read, because this type of post tends to be a long one!

You could try breaking it down into a step-by-step guide, or having sub-headings that take the reader through the stages they need to go through.

2. Beginner’s guide

This is a post for total beginners who are coming to a topic with absolute zero knowledge!

Examples of this post could be:

  • Beginner’s guide to using Instagram
  • Beginner’s guide to pregnancy yoga
  • Beginner’s guide to taking photos with your smartphone

3. Quick user guide

Give a quick lowdown on how something works. For example a parenting blogger could give a quick user guide on a breast pump or a formula prep machine.

It could also apply to cameras, phones or make-up tools. Think about what gadgets or items your audience needs and offer them a handy guide.

Although a user of course gets a manual with many items, there’s no replacement for getting advice from someone who has already used the item.

You can share with them the struggles you had and elaborate on any special features you were surprised about.

4. Review

Give a full and honest review on a product that your audience would be interested in.

For my parenting site the most-viewed review has been for a car seat. I did a full guide on how to install it as well as how the straps work and my opinions on the seat.

Remember to include the following information in your review:

  • General spec of the product – dimensions, weight etc.
  • What the product is for?
  • Does it work?
  • What are the best things about the product?
  • What are the worst things?
  • Is it good value for money?
  • What is your overall conclusion?

It doesn’t have to be a product that you review, it could be a service. For example if you blog about how to start a blog, you may share a review of a particular website host.

5. Compare the best products or services

Comparison posts are a great way to be helpful to your readers!

Pick a type of product or service your audience will be interested in and compare the leading products in that category.

For example a parenting blogger may compare the best double pushchairs on the market, offering insight into which has the best features and is the best value for money.

You could use a table in WordPress to organise the key points about each of the products. Using tables in your posts are a great way to be picked up for Google ranking!

9. Round-up post

These are fantastic posts as they provide great opportunity for connecting with other bloggers.

A round-up posts is themed around a particular topic and lists tips, activities or ideas related to that topic from other bloggers or experts in the field.

You can get the content for round-up posts from Facebook groups where bloggers connect and can ask for people to share their links about a particular topic.

In exchange for letting you use one of their images, you provide a backlink to the other blogger’s site. Having lots of backlinks is great for SEO, so most bloggers are happy to be involved in round-ups. Everyone is a winner!

You can also get your content for round-ups by messaging bloggers whose content you want to share. Always ask before you use anyone’s images!
