Sainsbury’s Nectar Power Up Dates 2023
Wondering if the Sainsbury’s Double Up 2023 event is going ahead and when?
In 2021 the Double Up promotion was axed by Sainsbury’s and this year has launched Power Up in its place.
Instead of Double Up Sainsbury’s brought in My Nectar Prices as a way for customers to get regular offers, and this year has introduced Power Up in the run-up to Christmas.
Power Up is a way to increase the value of your Nectar points. It’s not as generous as the old Double Up scheme but it does still allow you to double the value of your points.

What are the dates for Sainsbury’s Power Up?
The promotion allowing you to increase the value of your Nectar points runs from November 15, 2023, to November 24, 2023.
What is Sainsbury’s Power Up?
Power Up works in a very similar way to Double Up – your points double in value when you swap them for vouchers to spend in store at Sainsbury’s.
However you must be selected to benefit from the promotion, and I was not one of the lucky few this year.
You can swap your Nectar points for a voucher that increases their value. You need a minimum of 2,000 points to take part.
You can only swap points in the available amounts – 2,000, 4,000, 6,000 or 8,000 Nectar points.
You can swap a maximum of 10,000 Nectar points total during this deal.
All you need to do is:
- Head to the Nectar app
- See if the Power Up promotion is available to you
- Click to redeem and choose the amount of points you want to swap for vouchers
I was frustrated to not find the Power Up offer available in my Nectar app. I have over 8,000 points which are worth £40 normally, but would be worth £80 with Power Up.
Is Sainsbury’s Nectar Double Up cancelled?
The Sainsbury’s Nectar Double Up promotion was cancelled in 2021, the supermarket confirmed, and is unlikely to return.
This means we do not expect there to be a Nectar Double Up in 2023. This is obviously a shame for those who save their points all year in order to make the most of the promotion ahead of Christmas.
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “Fewer customers have been using Double Up over the last few years and so it’s only benefitted a small minority of our customers.
“We know some people will be disappointed to see it go, but we hope more customers will be able to take advantage of our new My Nectar Prices offer.
“This gives customers access to lower prices and personalised offers year-round.”

What is the Sainsbury’s Nectar Double Up?
Once a year Sainsbury’s used to run its Nectar Double Up promotion which means your points were worth twice as much on selected items.
Sainsbury’s places certain conditions on how the points can be spent so you need to follow their guidance to make sure you are eligible for doubling up.
The key things to note are:
- You can only double your points by ordering Double Up vouchers online or through the Nectar app – you can’t do a direct exchange in store.
- The vouchers can only be spent on eligible products, which are listed below.
- You exchange vouchers in multiples of £10 up to a maximum value of £100 – so you need at least 1,000 points so you can get your first £10.
What is replacing Sainsbury’s Nectar Double Up?
Nectar is a loyalty scheme owned by Sainsbury’s, which is also connected to other retailers such as Argos where you can also collect points and spend them to get money off future shops.
Members get one Nectar point for every £1 spent at a qualifying store.
Instead of Double Up, Sainsbury’s will now use My Nectar Prices offer.
This gives personalised deals with “tailored discounts” on handpicked products. In order to use it customers need to download the Nectar app and then shop at Sainsbury’s using the Smartshop app.
So how can I spend my Nectar points?
You can still collect Nectar points by scanning your card at checkout.
When it comes to spending your Nectar points you can do this in Sainsbury’s (but you can no longer get double points under Double Up) or in one of the Nectar partnership brands such as Argos and eBay.
How does Nectar Double Up work at Sainsbury’s?
Getting organised for the Nectar Double Up event is easy. First of all you may find it easier to have the app on your phone to get your vouchers, as last year Sainsbury’s gave people longer to exchange points for Double Up vouchers on the app.
To get your Double Up vouchers simply:
- Decide the area of the store where you want to spend your doubled Nectar points. Scroll down to see a list of categories.
- Exchange your points for vouchers, but you are limited to £100 worth of Nectar Double Up vouchers per Nectar card.
- You can only use each voucher for one transaction – so if you have a £50 voucher it needs to be spent all at once. For this reason it may be worth getting two separate £25 vouchers, for example, if you want to spend the points in two separate trips.
- These vouchers are ONLY eligible during this Double Up promotion, so you will need to spend them during the promotion window or lose those points. Think before you swap!
Are Sainsbury’s doing Double Up points this year?
Sainsbury’s does not usually announce its Double Up event until close to the promotion however eager money savers were disappointed in 2021 when Sainsbury’s axed the promotion.
As Sainsbury’s is now focused on its My Nectar Prices scheme it seems unlikely Double Up will return in 2022 or 2023.
When is the Sainsbury’s Nectar Double Up event 2023?
Sainsbury’s Nectar Double Up did not take place in 2021 and it is unlikely to return.
Based on previous Nectar Double Up events the promotion would have been due to run in mid November.
Is Sainsbury’s Double Up any good?
It used to be well worth taking advantage of the Nectar Double Up event if you already shopped regularly at Sainsbury’s and collect Nectar points.
Although you cannot get Double Up vouchers for every item in store, there’s a decent selection of categories where you can spend the vouchers.
The key issues with Double Up were:
- You need to spend the Double Up vouchers within one week. Once you’ve switched your points for Double Up vouchers that’s it, you need to spend them in the promotion or the points are gone forever.
- The Double Up vouchers need to be ordered in advance. This means you must plan ahead for how much money you want to spend in what category in store.
- The Double Up vouchers cannot be spent online. Sainsbury’s was last year urged by Money Saving Expert founder Martin Lewis to allow customers to redeem their Double Up vouchers online. However Sainsbury’s said last year it would not change the promotion and vouchers must still be redeemed in store only.

How do we spend our nectar points this year.
Hi there, You can still spend your Nectar points in store in Sainsbury’s but the supermarket is no longer doing the Double Up promotion. So it’s worth thinking about where you could spend those points, as you can spend them at Sainsbury’s or with various shops such as Argos and online with eBay. It’s not right that they have pulled it weeks before it’s due many including myself have had our shopping influenced by the fact we would be doubling up, they should have given warning like Tesco did when they changed their scheme. I will be voting with my feet.
I totally agree, many people plan ahead to take advantage of the promotion. It’s a real shame it’s not going ahead this year.
I’m very disappointed. And what offers I get on the app are rubbish really it’s the same every week or if it’s different. The weight is wrong in our store I buy them sometimes as point are given but don’t fancy it so goes in bin. So a big wast of time. I’ll be shopping some were else. When my point are gone Was looking forward to my double up this year as had lot more. Very angry.
It does seem a real shame it’s not going ahead this year, particularly as many people will have been saving points to take advantage of the offer.

Are there double up points for 2021
Sadly the Sainsbury’s Nectar Double Up promotion is cancelled for 2021. Instead Sainsbury’s is favouring its new My Nectar Prices. I will be doing a blog post shortly with a look at that the new offer is and whether it’s worth it.
They say its stopped because of little use ? Maybe if they made people more aware and did not have such a small window to claim ,that would not be the case …Peeved
Yeah I totally agree. It was also massively constrained by the short window and the strict rules around how you had to swap your points. I am disappointed it’s not going to happen as had plans for using the points for purchasing a few Christmas gifts.

They should have let us know there would be no double up earlier in the year as I for one would not have bothered shopping there to collect them, very underhanded behaviour by Sainsburys. Am voting with my feet. Other supermarkets are cheaper!
This sounds like a lie to me. Why would not enough people using it mean they’d stop it? Surely that’s to THEIR advantage as they’re not giving away double the money. If you ask me they’re doing it because they don’t want to. Nothing to do with customers preferences. Of COURSE last year less people used it – COVID – I didn’t shop instore last year so was saving my points for this year. And now I can’t have double up. They’re already stingy enough with the points as it is, now they’re even stingier. And they made it far more difficult to get the vouchers which you used to be able to get instore and then had to get online. How many old people can do that? How many old people will download an app onto a phone and use that when they’re shopping? This is 1) For Sainsburys and 2) For young people. Mean and nasty behaviour. Think I’ll be going to Tescos from now on.
My nectar prices are only avaible when you go in store and make the purchase and does not apply to clcik and collect or home deliveries. Therefore, I do not benefit from the new My Prices which have been introduced. I, like many others, have save my points through the year and would double up the maximum allowed and additional points would then pay for Christmas treats. There has always been a good uptake of this promotion in my local branch and since the announcement I have do not have any loyalty to sainsbury and now have online shops from a different supermarket each week.
So annoyed Sainsburys are not doing this…I wont be shopping in Sainsburys….nor Morrisons since they also pulled the plug on a decent ‘save for christmas’ scheme.
I’m very disappointed by Sainsbury’s decision not to do the double up after saving my points since the last double up, and than without notice they decided to cancel it. Surely it would have been better if they had said after 2020 this is the last double up, instead of fooling people to save all year and shop in Sainsbury’s 😬
Being a loyal customer does not pay. In future may as well shop and save in less pricey store with no points .No Merry Christmas from Sainsburys.
So disappointed no double up I have been a loyal customer for years it was like a reward for loyalty I know a few customers that have moved to different so store on being let down
I am very disappointed with Sainsbury’s collected my nectar points all year and now you are saying you are not doing double points at the last minute I spend hundreds off pounds at sainsbury every year and you have stopped this I will be shopping else where
really disappointed that its been scrapped as last year we were all been told to stay at home so no wonder it wasn’t busy. This year I’ve saved loads with the intentions of using them to double up for Christmas and now it wont happen. Not a happy customer
@lesley, the other reason it wasnt as well used last year is that you had to have the app downloaded to use it and wasnt advertised very well .

Gutted !! I have been waiting for this event and so looking forward to it having saved over 16,000 points. Gone on line tonight only to discover it’s been scrapped.

Very disappointed,just found out that the double up skeme has been cancelled,i think it should of gone ahead for this year,then announced that it would be the last one.
Totally agree with all the other comments. So disappointed with Sainsbury’s. This has nothing to do with the customer and everything to do with increasing their profit margin. We already get our weekly offers emailed to us so why do we need another set of offers ‘especially chosen’ for the individual customer….really? How does 30p off a loaf of bread ….that you wouldn’t normally buy….compare with doubling up the points you have collected over the year to help out with shopping or extra gifts for you family at Christmas?
The double up was a huge reason I loyally shopped with Sainsbury’s and their partners who offered nectar points…..so where is the loyalty from Sainsbury’s for customers like myself and thousands like me?
I too will be using my points and then voting with my feet to find a business who actually appreciates customer loyalty.
It’s not been run correctly some years. Last year it was all done via mobile phone – fine if you have one but Sainsbury’s customers comprise a lot of elderly who don’t. Nectar said we could still participate in store but lo and behold the store had no idea how to get non app purchases thru the til and there was mayhem as stressed operatives tried to sort it out. Two or three years ago I was told by a store assistant that they were not doing the double up that year because it messes up the stock control. Imagine my surprise to come in to store and see I’d missed it by a day. My complaint was greeted with ‘you should get your info from customer services’ which has now been phased out and lumped with the lottery counter. Double up would be supported if it was organised properly, giving adequate notice (last year was the first time Nectar informed me beforehand) signage in stores, advertising on the orange offer labels dished out. The overall impression is they don’t want the hassle of it. And whether they bring it back or not could Sainsbury and Nectar kindly not deal with issues of Nectar points by saying they are nothing to do with the other party. Not so and it really irritates.
Very bad. Big supermarket like Sainsbury’s would have made lots of profit annually, surely giving consumers the annual boost of doubling the points makes Christmas a happier event. Will probably shop elsewhere as other stores are definitely cheaper. 🙁 It used to be such a fun week when the Nectar points were doubled. Spoil spot Sainsbury’s!
Very disappointed there’s no Double Up, I agree with others, it’s not advertised and only a
short window to exchange, I think they do that so not many people will use it!! With Tesco this year I tripled up my £9 of points and got a Railcard for £3, so I wonder where I’ll be shopping!!!
What a rip off just coming up to the payout if it not worth it do away with the points and that will make things cheaper over the past year i have made notes of things that have gone up by 30 to 50 pence an item greed i for one will not be shopping at your store if this greed carries on shame on you.

Really disappointed! Like others have said, it seems underhand to wait until the promotion is due to happen before they announce they have pulled it. I have painstakingly saved £100, to get £200 of Christmas treats. I have deliberately passed petrol stations for the nectar points, and bought things I wasn’t even sure of, to get extra bonus points for the double up. What’s the point now? Shocking behaviour. This was so well used in my area the shelves were empty so to say it’s under used is a plain fib! I think they don’t want to part with stuff for their stupid points. Just greed! Will be ditching them in favour of cheaper shops who don’t act so badly!
Disgraceful of Sainsburys to cancel Double Up 2021. And a weak excuse of a reason, ‘not many people use it’ That’s because Sainsburys don’t widely advertise the promotion and this is deliberate to save them money. This is a god send to customers in the lead up to christmas and even more this year in these difficult times. Absolutely disgusting! I really don’t know what’s happening to Sainsburys but they are not showing customer appreciation. Think I need to look at shopping elsewhere.

I doubt very much it’s because too few customers didn’t take up the offer at all!! I save my points all year round so I can buy several Xmas presents at the Double Up. I take two friends every year to the Double Up promotion and they are EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED with Sainsburys and they vow they won’t be shopping there again! I am a Sainsburys colleague and I cannot reiterate how disappointed we all are of your decision to scrap this!!
“My Nectar Prices” has nothing to do with spending Nectar points so it’s clearly not a replacement for the double up offer. It allows Sainburys to target their discounts rather than offer every customer the same discount and actually is potentially a replacement for whole points concept.
Like many others I saved my Nectar points especially for this Christmas double up offer. It is a significant factor in my decision to shop in Sainburys and pay the higher prices.
As for not being popular, absolutely ridiculous. By the end of the offer week last year the shelves stocking offer products were empty and that’s despite the difficulties finding out about the offer and then working out how to use it before it finishes!
This decision seems so calculating (at the end of the year, not the start) and short-sighted by Sainburys and will certainly push me into the arms of other supermarkets.
I agree the My Nectar Prices deal is not a like for like swap with the Nectar Double Up promotion. So many customers are saying they saved all year only to be told last minute the deal would not happen, and unfortunately many will now vote with their feet by now not shopping with Sainsbury’s.

Is there going to be a double up points schemme this Nov?
There was no Nectar Double Up last year and I expect Sainsbury’s won’t bring it back this year either. They seem to be more focused on their Sainsbury’s Nectar Prices scheme. It’s a shame for people who had got used to saving up their points for the festive season.
I used to look forward to participating in this event, it enabled me to buy some normally unaffordable presents for loved ones for Christmas. I was really disappointed that it was cancelled last year if it is cancelled for good, I think I will go back to shopping at Tesco where you get cheaper prices but also benefit from collecting the points where, you can spend in far more places and you get triple points when spending with Tesco partners.
I agree it is such a shame the Nectar Double Up promotion is no longer being run. I still save my Nectar points up for the end of the year to put towards Christmas expenses but it’s so disappointing we no longer get the double bonus.
