I’ve been making my own money from home for nearly five years and have found some amazing ways to bring in more money, whether you’re looking for a little extra each month, part-time work or even a full-time gig!

Some great ways to make money as a woman are:

  • Blogging
  • Influencer
  • Freelance writing
  • Virtual assistant
  • Social media manager
  • Buying and selling stuff for profit
  • Etsy store
  • Tutoring

We’re going to take a look at these ideas plus more from legit side hustles to potentially life-changing business opportunities to give you the inspiration to get you started.

How to make money fast as a woman

First of all it’s important to say that any way a man makes money, is also a way a woman can make money!

But I’ve got some amazing, varied ideas to suit whatever skillset you have.

As women I think we are more often looking for flexible work because of childcare – that’s certainly what led me to look at many of these money-making ideas. You might also like these side hustles for mums.

The great news about making money for yourself is that there are so many options out there that I guarantee you will find something that you have a passion for.

As someone who has been making money online for nearly five years now let me tell you, there are tons of different options out there.

Most of these ideas do not require you to have any qualifications and can be started right away.

1. Blogging

This is my favourite way to make money and I know some women making an absolute fortune from this (five-figures a month!).

My blogs earn me over £4,000 a month in advertising, affiliate and other income. It’s taken me a while to get to this stage, but it’s so rewarding.

Blogging fits around my kids, and I’m able to do the school run and collect them without needing any wraparound care. In the school holidays I take time off to be with me kids when I want.

The flexibility is amazing.

Getting started with a blog is long game. You’ll be unlikely to earn any money in the early months, but the start-up costs are very low and if you go into a niche that interests you then you’ll enjoy the work.

To get started with a blog I follow this tried and tested path – you can read more about it in my guide to starting a money-making blog

  • Pick a niche. This is crucial. You are far better off niching down to something very specific that you know enough about and are passionate enough about to write hundreds of articles about it.
  • Start a blog with WordPress. You’ll need to purchase hosting and a domain name. Your host can help you get your blog up and running. I use Lyrical Host who are excellent.
  • Write great content. The key to a successful blog is amazing content that helps people.
  • Create social channels. Social media can help to drive traffic to your blog so create profiles for your blog on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest.
  • Keep writing. In the early stages this is really key. The more content you write that is valuable in your niche, the more chances of having your blog discovered by Google and the search engine sending people to your site. You can find more of my best blogging tips here.

Potential income: £1,000 a month to £10,000+ – this mother makes $40,000 a month

2. Sell your freelance skills

Do you have experience in graphic design? Website building and maintenance? Maybe you’ve got a great talent for voiceovers?

Women can make extra cash by selling those skills and the beauty is that there is a huge, readily available market for talented people online.

For certain freelance work you’ll never even have to leave the house.

Fiverr is a great place to start if you fancy building up some work as a freelancer.

Potential earnings: £500+ a month

3. Become an influencer

An influencer may entertain, inform, educate or a combination of all three. They create content on social media that is popular with their audience.

They can then monetise that audience by selling products of their own or affiliate market (this is where the influencer sells products from another company and receives a commission for any sales made).

There are influencers making six figures, although it’s extremely rare to see overnight success.

Some influencers become best known for a particular platform, with TikTok proving to be the platform most people are talking about right now.

Although it’s hard to get a very large audience, it is still possible to make money as a micro-influencer. Of course you won’t make as much with an audience of 10,000 compared to one of 1M+ but it’s still totally possible to earn cash.

Potential earnings: £100 a month to £10,000+ a month

4. Start a YouTube channel

Women who make money from YouTube earn the cash through advertising (which YouTube places during the videos).

Those with large audiences can also make additional money by selling their own products, sponsored work with brands who pay them to make videos about their products or services and affiliate marketing.

Building a successful YouTube channel means you will need good equipment to get started, although many people shoot their first videos on their smartphone.

Editing can be done in apps or on Mac’s iMovie (which is what I use).

I’ve been running my YouTube channel for around four years now and it’s a great way to earn extra cash in my own time!

To get started it’s wise to pick a niche

Potential earnings: £100 a month to £10,000+ a month

5. Sell your own products on Etsy

There’s a huge range of options for what you can sell on Etsy and I reckon everyone could have a shop on there!

Some examples of what you can sell on Etsy include handcrafted jewellery, clothing for the whole family (even pets), printable planners, wedding stationery and budgeting spreadsheets.

I’ve recently started my own Etsy shop and have found it incredibly easy to use.

The fees for listing your products are reasonable and by using Etsy you are getting access to a global market to sell to.

Potential earnings: £50 a month to £10,000+ a month

6. Start a print on demand business

This method of making money for women works really well for creative types. It’s helpful to have some kind of audience on social media who you can sell to, however it’s not essential.

Print on demand is where you work with a supplier of white-label products (such as tote bags, tees and sweatshirts) to customise them and sell on a per-order basis under your brand.

You can sell print on demand products through Etsy, Redbubble and Shopify.

The big plus of this type of side hustle is it’s passive income once you have got your shop online and marketed your products.

Potential earnings: £100+ a month

7. Freelance writing

There are many companies and individuals who may need to employ the help of a freelance writer.

You could get freelance work writing for blogs, news websites, online publications, B2B magazines, in-house training material and much more.

It can help to have a niche when you start getting into freelance writing – for example if you have any scientific background then writing for scientific publications would be a good fit.

Potential earnings: £200+ a month

8. Virtual assistant

A virtual assistant carries out a variety of tasks remotely for individuals or companies. They typically do so remotely, which is perfect if you are a woman looking for flexible work.

Some tasks you may do as a virtual assistant include:

  • Administrative work
  • Sending emails
  • Booking meetings
  • Scheduling social media posts
  • Bookkeeping
  • Data entry
  • Research

Potential earnings: £12-£25 an hour

9. Social media manager

Working as a social media manager is another great flexible option and will be appealing to those who already love spending time online.

Some social media managers specialise in one particular platform, while others work across all of them.

The number of hours you will be asked to do really depends on the type of company you are working for. I have worked as a social media manager for the last five years and in that time spend between 10 and 25 hours a week working.

Potential earnings: £15 to £50 an hour

10. Buying and selling stuff for profit

If you have an eye for a bargain and love to shop then buying other people’s unwanted items and selling them on for profit is a great way to make money.

Stuff you can buy and sell for a profit includes:

  • Designer clothes and shoes
  • Furniture
  • Books – especially specialist, rare books and textbooks
  • Rare coins
  • Collectibles

Potential earnings: £500+ a month

11. Tutoring

Tutors provide educational support to students, either one-on-one or in a group setting, in a variety of subjects ranging from primary school to university level.

If you are well versed in a particular musical instrument then you could also turn to music tuition, either as a private tutor working for yourself or working for a local company.

Tutors typically set their own hourly rates and work schedules, making it a flexible option for those looking to supplement their income. Tutoring can be done in person or online, allowing tutors to reach a wider audience and adding greater flexibility.

To become a tutor you will need a strong understanding of the subject you plan to teach, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Building a strong reputation through word-of-mouth referrals and positive reviews can help tutors attract more clients and increase their earnings.

To get starting try signing up to an agency such as Tutor House.

Potential earnings: £30 to £50 an hour

12. Become a mystery shopper

A mystery shopper tests out the customer service, products and layout of shop fronts for brands so that they can check their business is being run smoothly as expected.

There are apps you can download that will set you tasks at local shops and businesses, such as the Roamler app.

And there are also agencies that you can sign up to that will give you mystery shopping jobs. Some examples include Market Force, RedWigWam and iShop for Ipsos.

Potential earnings: Varies hugely – £5 to £20+ per job

13. Proofreading

A proofreader checks text before it is printed or published to get rid of spelling and grammatical errors as well as checking for sense and accuracy.

Some people may focus on their area of expertise, such as mathematics or technology.

You can find freelance proofreading work on Fiverr.

Potential earnings: £20,000+ a year

14. Bookkeeping

A bookkeeper helps a company or individual with keeping their financial records and accounts up to date.

You do not have to have formal training, however it can help to get some training so that you understand the software and tasks you’ll need to carry out. You can find out more at the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers.

Potential earnings: £15 to £50 an hour

15. Photography

If you have a keen eye for photography then there are lots of ways you can use that to earn money.

Celebratory photographers are in big demand for life events such as weddings, births, engagements and anniversaries.

Alternatively you could sell stock photography online to websites such as Shutterstock.

Potential earnings: £100 to £3000+ per month

16. Professional organiser

Do you love seeing books organised in rainbow colour? Or maybe you have your own household organisation system that wows your friends.

A professional organiser works with homeowners to organise their homes and put household management systems in place that help them live a less chaotic life.

The ladies at The Home Edit started out as a duo of professional organisers and it’s gone on to spawn a Netflix show and huge merchandise empire.

Potential income: £24,000 per year

17. OnlyFans

I must have seen dozens of features about women making money with an OnlyFans account. It’s not just celebrities like Kerry Katona who can make a mint on the subscription website.

Content creators on OnlyFans can make money from the subscription fee that their followers pay to view their content.  But there are a number of other ways to monetise your audience, in much the same way as any other social media influencer would.

You can sell your own merchandise and products to your audience, sell courses and also make money through direct messaging access.

Potential income: Six figures.

Final thoughts

There are plenty of ways for women to make money – whether you are looking for jobs for mums, work that fits around the school run or ways to make extra cash.

To get started think about your skills you already have and how those could potentially be turned to something that can make you money. If you are already working then consider whether you could ask for a pay rise at work, or if there is career progression you could work towards that would net you extra money.

Good luck!
