Shoppix review: Is this receipt-scanning app worth it?

Can the Shoppix app make you extra cash?

I’ve been using it for nearly a year and finally received my first reward! Now I confess I haven’t scanned every receipt I’ve had since I downloaded the app, however it has been the easiest £5 I’ve ever made.

While the rewards aren’t huge, I can see that this is a very low maintenance and simple way to earn a little extra money eventually.

It’s certainly never going to remotely replace a full-time income, but a few quid for minimal effort on your part may be a welcome boost to your household budget.

This Shoppix review is going to take you through how the app works, what I think of using it and how long it will take you to earn some ££££.

What is Shoppix?

The Shoppix app is an easy way of earning a few extra pounds. You scan your receipts (taking a picture with your phone’s camera when using the app), and earn tokens which can be exchanged for cash.

But don’t expect it to earn you a fortune, and it will take a while to earn enough tokens to exchange for money.

You need to earn 3,200 tokens to get a £5 reward.

Your Shoppix home screen will show your tokens total – along with how many shopping bags you have. You move up the shopping bags as you add more tokens to your total.

Scanning your receipt is easy. In the app you simply locate the big camera icon at the bottom in the centre, then select the receipt size and take the photo.

Your receipt may be rejected if the image is not clear or it has been more than seven days since your purchase.

What are the Shoppix rewards?

The rewards you can get from Shoppix are genuinely good, although it will take you a while to earn one.

You can choose your Shoppix rewards, once you have enough tokens, from the following options:

  • amazon.co.uk voucher
  • iTunes voucher
  • Love2Shop voucher
  • Cash to PayPal

The value of your tokens is as follows:

  • 3,200 tokens – £5
  • 6,000 tokens – £10
  • 11,500 tokens – £20

So you can see if you wait for your tokens to accrue to the big 11,500 total your tokens will actually be worth more.

How much is each receipt worth?

You will receive 25 tokens per receipt you scan. If you scan it on the same day as the purchase, you receive a 5 token bonus.

So potentially each receipt is worth 30 tokens.

You need 3,200 tokens for a £5 voucher. So each token is worth 0.001p.

One receipt is worth 0.04p in Shoppix tokens, if you scan it on the same day and grab the time bonus.

You can boost that total if you get invited to complete a survey about your shopping experience.

For example, when I scanned Sainsbury’s and M&S receipts I received invitations to surveys about my experience at the shops in the week after which were worth another 10 tokens each.

Other ways to earn tokens with Shoppix

You can earn extra tokens through other means with the Shoppix app. Some are super simple, others require a few minutes of your time.

E-receipts

Shoppix also accepts your e-receipts for online shopping!

To get started with this you simply go to the app and it will provide you with a unique Shoppix email address to send your receipts to.

I received a 100 token bonus for forwarding my first e-receipt.

You can then collect 25 tokens per valid e-receipt, plus you get a 5 token bonus for forwarding on the same day.

Scratchcards

Occasionally the Shoppix app will reward your efforts with scratchcards.

These appear on the home screen of the app, just below where your total number of tokens is.

Shoppix scratchcards

You simply tap to view your cards and then rub the screen to reveal what your reward is.

Most of the time I have received an extra 10 tokens, however occasionally the scratchcard has simply said “booooo” because I haven’t won anything.

Surveys

You can take your first survey within minutes of downloading the Shoppix app and setting up your profile.

I took a survey about transport when I first started using the app and received 20 tokens.

Other surveys will pop up after you scan receipts for certain shops, as the app asks you for more specifics about your shopping experience. The questions range from whether staff were helpful to whether you felt the products were good value for money.

The most I have received for a survey was 60 tokens.

Mostly the surveys are worth 10 or 20 tokens.

Prize draws

You gain entries to prize draws by using scratchards. Every time you reveal a scratchcard, you gain an entry to the weekly prize draws.

I currently have six entries to prize draws, with the prizes on offer being 10,000 tokens or 8,000 tokens.

I haven’t won yet but I guess this is a good way to potentially get to a payout much quicker!

How long does it take to get a payout from Shoppix?

You need to scan around 107 receipts to receive a payout from Shoppix.

However you can get there quicker if you also complete surveys in the apps and manage to win some extra points on the app’s scratch cards you may occasionally be awarded.

How long it takes you to get there really depends on how many receipts you scan, along with how much you take advantage of bonus ways to earn with Shoppix.

If you are a shopaholic and you remember to scan all of your receipts then you will get to the total needed to exchange for cash much quicker than someone who only shops once a week.

You can boost your tokens with surveys and scratch cards – although all I have ever won on their scratch cards is 10 tokens. I’s a nice addition but not going to rocket me to the 3,200 tokens needed for cash.

Final Shoppix review verdict

Shoppix is very much a long game when it comes to earning cash – unless you’re a shopaholic in which case you’ll be reaching that 3200 tokens in no time!

It is a legit app and the rewards you can get are decent, with vouchers for retailers you’re likely to actually use, such as Amazon, or the option to be paid to your PayPal account.

It’s certainly a very simple way to earn some small change, but there are other survey sites such as Prolific that pay more for your time and you can cash out much quicker.

It’s sensible to combine Shoppix with other money-making and saving methods. For example, when shopping at Argos recently I used my Nectar card to earn Nectar points, and paid with a bank card connected to my Airtime Rewards app to earn money off my phone bill.

I then scanned my receipt in the Shoppix app. It all adds up eventually.

It is worth noting however that the reviews for Shoppix on TrustPilot are not good. 84% of people gave it just one-star, with many complaining they never received their payout.

I think the Shoppix app is worth having if you can find the few seconds needed to scan your receipts when you have them.

After all, who doesn’t want an extra £5 every now and then?!
